This just in from the Associated Press by way of Yahoo News: Facebook block ahead of Iran vote hampers youth .
The decision, critics said, forces Iranians to rely on state-run media and other government sources ahead of the June 12 election.
It also appeared to be a direct strike at the youth vote that could pose challenges to Ahmadinejad's re-election bid.
An advisor to a pro-reform candidate was quoted as saying that "Facebook is one of the only independent sources that the Iranian youth could use to communicate." How are Emirati young people using Facebook to communicate beyond casual exchanges among friends?

Iranian want to fight with every and any aspect come from "out siders". I can't see whats wrong with Facebook, just because it is not one of the " state media".
I searched in Facebook and I found there are different usage for facebook. For example, there is group for Emiratie Photographers, they share photos, have feedbacks and they announce fro photography compatitions. There are some business groups like Attharh (for perfumes) and there is a group for people who are looking for jobs in Dubai. There is also a movie director, he promote for his coming movie in facebook. There are a lot of other stuff, but NO candidates!
Young Emiratis are using Facebook for anything that comes to mind. Shared Interests, Educational Purposes, Fanclubs, Dating and much more.
It is certainly unfortunate that Iran decided to block it.
"'It is always a shame when a country's cultural and political concerns lead to limits being placed on the opportunity for sharing and expression that the Internet provides,' she wrote."
I agree with her. They're taking away the opportunity for their youth to learn more, and try new things.
Facebook can be good and bad. You have to be smart enough to take advantage of the good stuff, and avoid the bad stuff. It can really help you grow, by learning many different things from different groups that you join and different people that you meet.
I don't understand the relation between facebook and the Iranian elections. What I understood from the article that there are several reasons contributed to that. the most important reason is that Iranians must rely on the government for information. So facebook is considered a competitor? what about Twitter?
I think it was a stupid idea, especially if they want youth's votes in their elections. So what if they use fb as a source of information about elections and candidates positions? At least they care, whatever is the mean.
Facebook has many different ways of communication. People can post in groups and have comments about their posts, they share their status, join causes, become fans and make up their own groups and pages.
