This semester Dr. J's Wonderful Web World will be focusing on media law and ethics with emphasis on globalism and technology. So it's not all that far from what has been appearing on the blog since fall 2008. Expect to see much discussion about what's going on with Google in terms of privacy, copyright, cyberattacks and antitrust concerns. A good news analysis ran as the lead story on the International Herald Tribune front page earlier this week. For Google, the biggest source of risk is in Europe.

Excerpt:
In a region where the media sector is mostly fragmented along national lines and sometimes dependent on public subsidies, Google's border-straddling scale, its ambitious pursuit of profit and its embrace of an open, anything-goes Web are raising alarms.

....and law suits!

NOTE TO THOSE OF YOU IN THE CLASS: We will discuss Sunday.

I like the discribtion of he minister of justice, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger when he describe google “megalomania.” I agree that google is a big risk becaue google news displays excerpts from online news articles and it violates publishers copyrights and it not have a privacy protections. But as the article mentioned i thingk a new kind of copyright protecting journalistic content on the Web is a good idea that will nt lead to fight with. even if Germany of Italy will trial google, google will win.

In Europe, Challenges for Google
It has been reported in a New York Times article (PFANNER, 2010) that Google might face bigger problem in Europe then China. On issues of privacy company is clashing with adversaries and it is escalading in Western Europe.
Google operations in Europe are larger and lucrative than China. Italy’s Prime Minister has proposed a law to make YouTube liable to privacy and other violations and Google is contesting a Copyright lawsuit from Mediaset, largest television broadcast company. They put it as full scale war against Google for privacy protection. Google says it is an isolated response and popularity means come complaints. On Goggle news excerpts from online sources have complaints from Italy and Germany and pressing to buy special licenses for that. Many German towns have blocked Google for taking home front pictures in Street View. Google largely avoided run-ins with powerful European Commission unlike Microsoft and Intel. Google have 80 percent web searches in Europe and 65 in US with 17 Yahoo and 11 percent Microsoft share.
Commission officials have stressed on material evidence that company is using its dominance to abuse privacy before launching anti-trust lawsuit. On the other hand the dearth of homegrown rivals to Google is undermining any move to take regulatory action against it. So “Brussels many not want to pick a fight with Google,” said C. Ervin Stewart, an antitrust expert at law firm of Zuckerman Spaeder, “because there is no one to reward if they win.”

I like Google quote“Our popularity means some people will complain. The important thing for us is to do the right thing, and that means not locking our users into our products and working well with our partners.”

The company priority is to deliver the right products to the customers without affecting their partners in all conditions whether this delivery will cost the company too much.

I like the article because it considering big issue about copyright and the violation of this problem. Furthermore, it has mentioned Google an estimation of 1.2 billion euros from search advertising in Germany. However, the article didn’t mentioned street opinion very much and doesn’t went in deep to explain more about the copyright violation and how to avoid other company form doing the same.

I liked the article too much because it shows how Google Company is suffering from competitors especially in Europe (Germany & Italy). The article highlights important facts about Google operation in handling searching engines. For instance, “Google handles 80 percent of European Web searches — compared with 65 percent in the United States”. I also liked this quote, “Our popularity means some people will complain. The important thing for us is to do the right thing, and that means not locking our users into our products and working well with our partners”, because every successful company have competitors who wants to be in the top. I agree that Google is really at a big risk in publishing articles that have no copyrights and no privacy protections, but they do know how to protect themeselves.
