Dubai: Too Much, Too Soon?

That's what BBC television suggested this morning. Here we are with front-row seats on a financial crisis that is rocking the world, but we may have to go seeking outside sources to find out what is going on and what it all means. Reuters in a story with the combination dateline DUBAI/ABU DHABI says you wouldn't know about the crisis that is "sending a shudder through global markets" if you relied on local media. Crisis, what crisis? Debt-ladened Dubai just shrugs is the headline on an article posted on Reuters today.

Where are you following the story? What do you think are the most creditable media stories? And were those "negative" stories we read about Dubai earlier in the year unfair reporting by foreign journalists or an unbiased look at what is going on? How should local media be reporting this story of global importance?

i was heard about these stories through word of mouth and my families. I checked what is written on the net and i found most of foreign websites like BBC News wrote more about Dubai debt crisis and what is really happend than local newspapers which i found that they only try to accuse Western countries that they are attacking Dubai's successes!! most of thses "negative" stories we read about Dubai is not publish here in UAE. i see that most of foreign journalist are fumed when they write about Dubai but i dont know why

I was closely following this story as it happened; while Dubai's news outlets kept emphasizing how this crisis was overblown by foreign media, Abu Dhabi media coverage focused on how the country is one, standing strong and united.

Of course, I expect the local media to be bias, eliminating or at least minimizing any negative news stories. I read several articles from the Guardian, New York Times, CNN and BBC. Getting a view of everyone's take on the issue gave me an idea of what was going on more accurately.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid was joking with journalists and kept a positive outlook on the matter to give residents and investors less reasons to panic.

The truth is however, what the article we read earlier in semester predicted is beginning to happen; the city is a "colossal wreck" waiting to happen. I'm eager to see what happens next. Will Abu Dhabi buy Dubai as everyone is saying? What will happen to the Palm islands and Dubai World?

I've been hearing about this story from foreigners more than the locals and from international media rather than local media. I "secretly" rely on the international media just because I feel like the local media will not state the facts as much as trying to brighten things up. There's nothing wrong with being positive, but we need more facts than hopes.

I have read and heard about this issue a lot lately. it became one of hottest topics especially in the past few days with the national day celebration. Its a shock to see Dubai having all these debts and asking to postpone the payment time. because what we used to see and hear before is a vision of a leader ! how come there is a vision and now they are falling in debts and they cant pay it back !!

westerns media were attacking dubai a lot lately, but the local media showed that we are united and strong enough to stand next to each other and help each other.

i think the westerns media took it too extreme, they should deliver the news in balance. local media and especially because of the 38th union celebration of the UAE, they didn't want to shake the image of union which Sheikh Zayed had built and showed that the seven emirates are ONE body whatever happens.

No one knows what's going to happen next! we just have to wait and see..
will Abu Dhabi bail Dubai out or something els is going to happen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been following this story mostly through local newspaper and TV and sometimes CNN website. Its difficult to say what is creditable and what is not because stories that are written in newspapers or blogs are mostly people’s opinion, so to me I intend to believe this news from people living in dubai, however not anyone but people that are related in somehow with the dubai crisis. Yes the negative stories that were said about dubai were unfair because if you read most of the foreign newspaper they are attacking dubai in a way instead of that they have to inform people about what is really happening and updating them with information rather then writing silly things. Well when it comes to a crisis the Emirates is not open and much cooperative with the information they give so that have to put effort in giving the best information and if local media did that then the foreigners will not have the chance to write negative things.
