"Historic Television Moment"

That's what Tim Bennett, president of Oprah Winfrey's Harpo, announced yesterday in a letter to ABC affiliate stations. The moment comes today when Oprah tells her viewers that she is ending her hugely popular daytime talk show on 9 September 2011.

Oprah started her TV career as a Baltimore, MD anchor but couldn't deliver the detachment anchors need to report the news, so the station gave her an early morning talk show. She moved on to host A.M. Chicago in 1984. When the show was syndicated two years later, the Oprah Winfrey Show was born. In no time, it became America's top talk show, and the rest is history.

When Time put her on the cover ("The Beloved Oprah") on 5 October 1998 as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, the headline on her profile read: "She didn't create the talk-show format. But the compassion and intimacy she put into it have created a new way for us to talk to one another."

Ah, but do not weep, dear readers and Oprah viewers. Oprah isn't retiring. Look for her in two years on her very own cable network, OWN. Oprah Winfrey Network, of course. See the New York Times for more.

To this day, I still can't figure out why people and me have so much admiration for this woman. She's just a "talk show host." lots all my respect for Oprah. I think she's going to start up her own cable TV channel. She will be back, and making more money and not disappears. It is sad to hear that because i like to watch her program. She lost viewers last year when her 'entertainment' show became a political show. No matter what she thought of Palins politics as a woman who has her own show on which she promotes many, many, many women who have accomplished great things she should have been doing her darndest to get Palin on her show. Her support of Obama caused her to lose a lot of viewers.
Now what will her will viewers do?

I think thats so disappointing. I was one of the people who often watched her show. Whether I agreed with the things she said or no, I think that Oprah had a great influence on people. Sometimes her influence was sort of a bridge between worlds that never met. A lot of times her show brought the world closer for example, when she spoke to queen Rania about the Arabic and Islamic world. Also when she spoke to a lady from the UAE about Dubai -which the girls here ended up criticizing- .
Fatima mentioned that she lost a lot of her viewers because of her support for Obama, but I think that makes her a lot more admirable because she didn't let her high position and the people that control it change her opinion. She spoke for what she believed in and I think thats what made her who she is today.

Why do you think Oprah is so popular here? We should discuss this in class? What about her program transcends country, religion, age?

“The billionaire queen of daytime television” I liked the way that NY times called Oprah. To be honest, I think it’s a two side issue. It’s a lose but at the same time its a success. I think Oprah worked hard to build her image until she reached the whole world. She started her career from the zero and draws her image until she reaches this place of popularity. It’s a lose because sometimes she was the voice of the people who had problems, supported children rights and raised many issues about women and their rights. But from the other side, it’s a success for her. After all these years of service she should have her own network station to keep her name always remembered.

Responding to Dr J. I think that the Arab world in generally open to western TV shows, movies and so on. The thing about Oprah is that she had something for everyone. She brought up medical issues as well as celebrity gossip. She had something for all ages and spoke about different religions. It also got crazy publicity when it first started airing on MBC, and at that time everyone was watching MBC. I still remember the commercial for her show. They said something like "The greatest TV personality in the US will now be showing here exclusively" I think that generally grabs people's attention. I remember as well a short video of Oprah that MBC got from her saying something like " If your in the middle east watch me on MBC" I think she got really close to everyone around the world with her social personality. There's just something about Oprah!

Dr.J i think she is popular becaue she is an extraordinary woman, humanitarian, philantropist, teacher, and TV personality. Also, she has much more to do, much more to offer to us, so much more to share with us and many more ways to help us grow as individuals, community and world. she likes all people from different regions with out discriminate between them
